Hillside clearing above the lake
Selective clearing on a steep wooded slope above the water, where nothing could be driven and everything had to be lifted out over the top.
What we were looking at
The property sits on a wooded hillside running down to the lake. The trees coming out were on the slope itself, which ruled out driving anything to them, and taking material downhill toward the shoreline was not an option worth considering. The good hardwoods staying put were mixed in among the ones coming out, so this was selective work rather than clearing.
How we did it
We worked it with the knuckleboom crane set up at the top of the slope, picking each section and lifting it up and out over the standing timber rather than skidding anything down the hill. Cutting to a pick means the piece never travels across the ground, which is what keeps a slope like this from being torn up and what keeps material out of the water. The trees marked to stay were left with their root zones untouched.
