Oak through the roof

A storm dropped a mature tree across the back of the house. The butt was hollow, so nothing about the failure was visible from the ground until it happened.

What we were looking at

The tree came down onto the rear roofline and stayed there, with the crown draped across the shingles and the trunk resting on the deck rail. The base told the real story: the butt was hollow through most of its diameter, with only a shell of sound wood left holding it up. From the yard the tree had looked fine. There was a garden shed a few feet to one side and a deck directly underneath, so there was nowhere to drop anything.

How we did it

We set the lift in the driveway rather than working off the roof, because putting weight and a running saw on a structure that has already been hit is how a repair bill doubles. The crown came off in small pieces from above, lowered clear of the shed. Once the canopy weight was gone, the trunk was cut back in sections working away from the house until the remaining butt could be lifted off the roofline in one piece rather than dragged across it.
