Ash Tree Removal in Central Minnesota
Ash tree removal has become a large part of what we do across Cokato, Dassel, Annandale and the rest of the area, because emerald ash borer is now well established in this part of Minnesota. Ash is not like other trees once it dies. It goes brittle quickly, and a standing dead ash that was a routine removal one year becomes a lift-only job the next.
How to tell if your ash has emerald ash borer
The clearest early sign is thinning at the top of the canopy while the lower branches still look reasonable, because the insect works downward. After that come the tells that are easier to confirm: shoots sprouting straight out of the trunk and root flare, which is the tree trying to grow around damage it cannot repair. Bark that looks blonde and stripped in patches, which is woodpeckers working the larvae underneath. And once the bark comes off, the S-shaped tunnels underneath, along with small D-shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across.

Treat it or remove it
This is the honest conversation and it comes down to how much canopy is left. An ash that still has most of its crown is a good candidate for trunk injection, and a healthy mature ash is worth keeping. Once an ash is past roughly half its canopy, injection stops being a good investment because the tree does not have enough working vascular tissue left to move the product or to recover. At that point the money is better spent on removal. We will tell you which side of that line your tree is on rather than selling you a treatment that will not work.
Why waiting costs more
A declining ash is a normal removal. A dead ash that has stood through two winters is not. The wood loses strength quickly, limbs start shedding on their own, and the trunk can no longer be trusted to hold a climber or a rigging load. That pushes the job from a climb to a lift, adds crew time, and raises the price. It also raises the odds of the tree dropping something on its own schedule instead of ours. If you have an ash that is clearly finished, it is cheaper to deal with this year than next.
Replanting after ash
Most people want something back in the same spot. The thing to avoid is planting another single species across a whole yard or boulevard, which is exactly how ash became such a problem in the first place. Oak, hackberry, Kentucky coffeetree, linden and river birch all do well in this part of Minnesota, and mixing what you plant is the best insurance against the next pest that comes through.

Ash is priced like any other removal, on size, access and what is underneath. The variable specific to ash is condition. A declining ash with sound wood is a standard job. A dead one that has been standing for a couple of seasons costs more, because brittle wood has to be worked from a lift instead of climbed and everything has to be handled more carefully.
