Oak beside the house
A large oak growing hard against the corner of the house, above a block retaining wall, with the whole canopy over the roof.
What we were looking at
The tree stood within a few feet of the wall of the house, on ground held up by a low block retaining wall, with the canopy leaning across the roofline. The retaining wall was the complication as much as the house: it takes point loads badly, so nothing heavy could be allowed to land on it or be driven over the ground above it.
How we did it
Rigged and taken down in sections from the top, with every piece lowered onto the open lawn away from both the house and the wall. The lawn side gave us a working area, so once the canopy above the roof was gone the remaining trunk could be worked conventionally away from the building.

A storm dropped a mature tree across the back of the house. The butt was hollow, so nothing about the failure was visible from the ground until it happened.
