Dead tree over the house

A standing dead tree leaning over the roof, taken down in late winter while the ground was still frozen and the yard could take equipment.

Standing dead tree with bare limbs leaning over a house roof in Howard Lake, Minnesota

What we were looking at

The tree was dead through the whole crown, bare white limbs against the sky with no bark left on the upper wood. It stood over the roof of the house with the canopy directly above the ridge. Standing dead wood is the case where a climb is off the table, because there is no way to know what a limb or the trunk will hold until it fails, and by then somebody is tied into it.

How we did it

Worked from the lift, not climbed. Sections came off the top and were lowered clear of the roof rather than dropped. Booking it while the ground was still frozen meant the truck and lift could set up on the yard without leaving ruts, which on this property was the difference between doing it in February and waiting until the ground dried out in June.
